Being a Nikon shooter myself, it was one of those cameras that I just had to add to my kit, especially with the increase of video work I'd start to take on with show reels and Instagram reel content. - [The Importance of a Spray Tan for a Fitness Photo Shoot](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/importance-of-spray-tan-fitness-photo-shoot/): A fitness photo shoot is all about looking your best and showcasing your hard work. Whether you’re a bodybuilder, a fitness model, or just someone celebrating a fitness milestone, every little detail matters. One of the most overlooked yet powerful tools to enhance your appearance is a spray tan. It not only makes your muscles pop but also gives you that glowing, polished look that looks incredible on camera and brings everything together to complete the overall package. - [How I Got The Shot – Flour Shoot](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/flour-shoot/): I've lost count of the number of times people have messaged me asking "what lights did you use to get that photo" "how do you come up with your shoot ideas" - so I decided to go back through the hard drive to one of my most creative shoots and explain "How I Got The Shot". The shoot in question is the flour shoot I shot back in 2018, a shoot that received over 300+ likes on my Instagram. Therefore with it being one of my most popular shoots, it was only fitting to take the time to film a short video break down.Flour Shoot - It's All About PlanningSometimes the simplest of lighting can create the best shots, as I detail in the video below however before any flour was chucked around I had to make sure everything was spot on! You can't be resetting a shoot once the flour has started to turn a perfectly clean gym into what looks like a scene from Scarface! Researching lighting setups online helped me to make sure I knew exactly what lights I needed on the day. Slightly different from the normal setup I use on my typical gym shoots, the main focus to capture the movement and motion of the flour in the air. - [Live Streaming with a Nikon Z6](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/live-streaming-with-a-nikon-z6/): As we are still currently in a lockdown and the whole "work from home" idea is still very much present, I decided to create my own home "live streaming" setup. One thing I wanted to do however was to use my Nikon Z6 as the main streaming camera, which wasn't too hard to do, but finding the right pieces to make it all work together was! After watching a few YouTube videos for ideas and watching the Joe McNally home broadcast setup from the last lockdown, I put together a list of "must-haves" and slowly ticked them off. - [Documenting My Daily Walk COVID-19 Photography](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/covid-19-photography/): 2020 has been such a strange year and one that I’m not going to forget in a hurry! With lockdown still in effect and COVID-19 putting everything on hold, it’s a strange time to be in at the moment. Personally, I’ve been using this time to work from home to update the website, catch up on editing as well as trying to learn new skills. One of those skills has been video and video editing. Therefore, I decided to setup the Nikon Z6, plug in the Rode WirelessGo and hit the record button! The idea behind the video was to document the social effects that COVID-19 and this pandemic.Capturing COVID-19Recently I was getting fed up of just doing the same daily walk, there are only so many times you can walk left out of your road! Therefore, I decided to document one of my walks, exploring the local surroundings and shooting a roll of black and white film - something I have not done in about 5 years!! The camera and film of choice was my Hasselblad 501cm with some Ilford HP5+. - [Charlotte and Rob](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/charlotte-and-rob/): On Saturday 8th June I was back up in the awesome Dedicated XL gym up in Liverpool. A gym I’d shot at previously however, this was before their huge Watson Equipment refit! So not only could I not wait to see the new gym I couldn’t want to capture some stunning photos with Charlotte and Rob. The couple had decided to book myself for a shoot to document their personal transformations. So after getting in touch with myself via Instagram they booked in at the start of March. This gave them that date to work towards their target and be accountable for their training and diet going forward.A Gym Like No OtherI had seen photos of the new refurbished Dedicated XL gym online, I wasn’t ready to see this place in the fresh as WOW words can’t describe how incredible and motivating this place is. Not only that but the gym is also 24/7 - imagine have a gym like the one below on your doorstep to use whenever you like!!Whilst Charlotte and Rob were getting warmed up and I had finished setting up my lighting equipment, I took a little walk around the gym. Scouting out shoot ideas and locations to try and use. Which was tough as there was soooo much to choose from! This gym had basically every bench, machine and dumbbell you could ask for and more! It really was like being a kid in a sweetshop and that sweetshop was a gym.Charlotte and Rob - Inspiring TogetherThe hardest thing about training for some people is sticking to a plan. If you don’t have the people around you to help and support then it’s even tougher. This wasn’t the case for Charlotte and Rob after they decided to do a joint transformation together."After seeing Rob competing last year, it kind of made me want to do it as well. So the shoot was a reason to get lean and have a good starting point to build on and as a ‘practice cut’. Rob also wants to compete again next year so he needed a reason to cut down too cause he rebounded quite bad after competing"— CharlotteWith that in mind, they decided there was no time like the present to get in the best shape ever. Charlotte teamed with a fellow Charlotte, Charlotte Pickstock (Level Up with Charly) who's an IFBB/PCA bikini champion. Rob went the UK Viking himself and NABBA Mr Universe 2017 winner, Josh Maley. After finding their coaches, the couple were ready to put their hearts and souls into being the best versions of themselves they could be!! - [How to: Editing Fitness Photos using Adobe Lightroom](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/editing-fitness-photos-using-adobe-lightroom/): Since I started shooting fitness photography, it's always been a bit of a learning curve. It's not something you can really study or just pick up and start shooting. Magazine after magazine I'd look at the photos shot by some of the best and kept wondering "how can I be editing fitness photos as good as these guys?!" Looking at the lighting and developing my style over the years, I've been managed to create a look I'm happy to apply to most of my editing. - [New York New York](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/new-york-city/): NYC, The Big Apple, home of TV series Friends or Marvel's Luke Cage (on Netflix) - however you know New York everybody knows something about this city. The city that never sleeps and awash with the famous yellow taxis. It's a place I've always wanted to visit. Countless Hollywood films have used these streets and blocks as scenes in blockbuster movies, so once the trip was confirmed I started to binge watch film after film featuring New York! 5 days walking block to block, travelling between boroughs on the subway and not forgetting tasting some amazing food....NEW YORK style! - [Sunset Fitness Shoot](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/sunset-fitness-shoot/): Recently the weather in the UK has been incredible! Sunny day after sunny day. So when you get a phone call from your friend Gaz asking if you fancied a rooftop shoot to try and capture the evening sunset, you can't really say no. Plus what better to enjoy the sunshine than on a rooftop in Bristol somewhere. It was also an excuse to try out my new Nikon 300mm f/2.8 VR II, on what was going to be an epic outdoor location. The Only Way is Up!I didn't really know much about the location of the rooftop, but as I was meeting up with Gaz later that Saturday to try and shoot some more content for Muscle and Fitness, I was just following his lead. Although he wasn't wanting to give too much away in terms of where about's exactly it was, all he said was "hope you don't mind climbing!" Once we had finished shooting some amazing gym photography for his next Muscle and Fitness article, it was time to pack down most of the lighting equipment as it was time to head on up to the mystery roof. - [Matt Tapp Memorial Jam 2018](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/matt-tapp-memorial-jam-2018/): Farnborough skate park was once again for the 5th year home to the Matt Tapp Memorial Jam, created and organised by the amazing Charile Norton aka Big Boss. The previous years (2017, 2016, 2015) have set the way for this event to bring not only Matt's family together but close and distance friends back to the skate park to remember the life of Matt Tapp. With an even bigger prize haul from last year, the 2018 jam was going to be the biggest and best one yet!Going Bigger for 2018The format of the day was much the same of previous years. Everyone heading to the skate park for 11am with the first BMX jam kicking off just after midday. Once again the turn out down the park was incredible, Farnborough locals and those who visit every year to show their support. This year Charlie was lucky enough to have support from Rockstar and Brooklyn Brewery, meaning that everyone could have a drink during the event (strict ID bouncing was in place by the Big Boss on the alcohol)High Flying ActionAt this years event the BMX riders thought they would spice things up with some high flying big air competition. The aim of the game....get as much air as possible on one of the parks quarters! What could go wrong right?! Well not too much to be honest compared to last year's air out of the park action which resulted in a rather bloody mess! - [Paris – Week in the City of Lights](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/paris-week-in-the-city-of-lights/): The last time I visited Paris was back in 2009, so almost 10 years ago! This was for a short break skateboarding around the French capital, with a few friends. However, the main purpose of this was trip to capture some stunning photography of this wonderful city. There was no real set plan in terms of "this day I'll go here" although before my trip I did look through Pinterest for Parisian inspiration. Locations, times of day to visit these locations as well as the all-important - how to get the very best out of my week-long trip. So with all that knowledge (mainly gained during my Eurostar tunnel journey) it was time to unpack and hit the streets of Paris! - [Fast Kicking Action Photography](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/fast-kicking-action-photography/): The other weekend I was approached by a local IFBB bikini athlete, Effie Parnell-Hopkinson, to create some unique photography for her social media channels. The main idea for the shoot was to capture some fast-paced action photography down at Kickboxing Cheltenham. Boxing, roundhouse kicks........basically some bad ass photographs in an amazing photogenic environment. So with my Elinchrom ELB's packed and charged it was time to up that shutter speed and capture the action!High Speed for Fast Action PhotographyThe lighting on the shoot was rather simple, almost the standard setup that I use for most of my fitness photography. The main light was boomed above to create a nice downlight, side fill for detail and separation. Most of the time I'll use quite a strong uplight to fill in some of the boomed shadows, however, on this shoot, I opted for a 105cm shoot through umbrella. Allowing for a wider spill of light, and adding some highlights to the black punching bag. - [How To: Update your Metadata in Lightroom](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/how-to-update-your-metadata-in-lightroom/): As another year comes to an end, it's time to prepare for what's in store for 2018. This might be looking over all the shoots from 2017 and seeing what worked and where the improvements are needed. Maybe it's time to update your equipment, buy a new lens or even a new camera body?! One thing that can't be overlooked however is making sure your camera's copyright and import metadata is up to date. - [Winter 360 Gloucestershire](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/winter-360-gloucestershire/): The festive season is well and truly upon us. Christmas parties, plenty of food and as of today the magic that is snow! It might have been two days for a "white Christmas" however nevertheless, the feeling of Winter was ever present. Therefore, I tried to capture this magical moment by bringing out my DJI Mavic Pro drone to create a beautiful winter 360. Taking to the skies to view the snow-covered houses and hills around Gloucestershire.Taking to the Winter SkiesWhilst the snowy streets and paths looked extremely picturesque, I was more interested in seeing the scene from above. Recently DJI has updated the Mavic firmware to allow 360 pano capture, something I was keen to try. I've enjoyed shooting 360 photography from the ground, therefore from the sky was taking it to new heights. Walking over to Coopers Edge, normally a short trip, however, in these winter conditions it took about 40 minutes. I'm glad I did though as the view walking between the new modern buildings and sweeping hills was amazing. - [2017 Review](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/2017-in-review/): As the year is finally coming to an end, it's time to reflect on the past 12 months. 2017 has been quite an eventful one. So sit back and enjoy this short round up of events and various projects!!2017 Review - The Year of Fitness Photography!I've been shooting fitness for about 2-3 years however this year saw myself capture over 35 new clients. A big increase from last year. Most of my weekends and evenings spent editing, shooting and sending off the final photography. It's good to see my work reaching such a wide audience. Having clients from Derby, Sheffield and London - it's been amazing to shoot everyone! On every session, the client had their own story and reason why they booked the shoot. For a lot of people, it's been the journey to get into the best shape of their life. Whether it was weight loss or stepping on stage. Just having the confidence to step in front of the camera is normally the biggest challenge. A lot of the clients I've captured this year have never had a shoot, so it's always good to hear these positive reviews -It's always nice to hear such positive feedback, it's why I enjoy the fitness shoots so much! Below is a small selection of this years fitness photography. To view more fitness cotent, make sure to visit my Instagram (might as well drop a follow as well whilst you're there)Taking a New Direction with 360 Photography and VR2017 has been an a big year for 360 photographic devices. More and more manufactures bringing out the "next big thing". Nodal Ninja. However for myself, nothing beats my current 360 photography of my Nikon D800, Sigma 8mm and adaptor. The results this setup produce are second to none. I was approached by Colburn Homes to create a multi room tour, in the stunning location of Warwickshire. To find out more about the project visit the post here or click to the photo to launch the tour. - [Developing your Style as a Photographer](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/developing-your-style-as-a-photographer/): Being a photographer can sometimes be a stressful job but most of the time it’s a very rewarding one. Creating images that others enjoy as well as meeting new people with inspirational stories. When I first started photography my passion was capturing my friends skateboarding. Now however, my photography genre and style has changed massively! I still capture the odd skateboarding photo and event. My passion now tends to be within the world of fitness. Photographing transformations, personal training portraits and pre/post show athletes. Looking back over some of my very first fitness photos, it’s clear I wasn't totally confident. Compared to my work now, it's like they were shot by someone else. My equipment might have changed a little but the biggest change has been my ideas and understanding of creating layering plus using different angles within the shot. - [Owner vs King 2017 – Battle of the Beasts](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/owner-vs-king-2017/): Owner vs King is a well know event hosted byThe Gym Gloucester. The other monthly competitions include the Queen and King of the Gym events. The theme with all these different events are about proving your strength, endurance and willpower. Saturday 15th July it was the turn of the owner, James Churchill, to prove he's own strength against the King Gym 2016 winner Ryan Kibble. These two powerhouses went head to head into battle, which was the ultimate test of lifting Owner vs King. The format was the same as the King of the Gym competition but with a bigger prize at stake.....beating the owner and founder of The Gym Gloucester!Blood, sweat and tearsWith a large turn out of supporters, family and friends the scene was set for an epic day. Both James and Ryan gave it their all and battled hard. So much so it all came down to the very last event. In the end James just took the win but well deserved after coming 3-0 down half way through the competition. - [First Look: Elinchrom ELB 1200](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/elinchrom-elb-1200-review/): If you're passionate about location photography and use a lot of flash, then you would have heard back in February that Elinchrom replaced their old Ranger RX system. The new system would be a revolution in portability and the ideal power-tool for the most adventurous of photographers. Say hello to the brand new Elinchrom ELB 1200. - [A Week Along the Amalfi Coast](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/week-along-the-amalfi-coast/): At the start of June, I was boarding a plane to visit the sunny area of the Amalfi Coast. This was my first holiday in quite a while, therefore I was rather excited! The views along the coastline looked stunning and I couldn't wait to explore the city of Sorrento. Before leaving I wanted to make sure I had some sort of plan in place so I knew where or what was around the area. There's no point visiting a location without knowing details about where you're visiting. - [Colburn Homes – Project Overview](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/colburn-homes-360-virtual-tour/): Colburn Homes are a residential development company based within Gloucestershire. For their latest project in Warwickshire, I was asked to capture a bespoke 360 virtual tour. The purpose was to highlight and showcase one of the new properties at the Devereux Close development. The final tour would be used online, to allow prospective buyers to view the show home before booking a full viewing. The difference between something good and something great is attention to detail- Charles R. SwindollThe property was like nothing I'd ever seen before. Each room had such attention to detail, that combined together created a stunning "Wow" factor. From the kitchen to the main en-suite, all the rooms were unique with loads of character. - [Matt Tapp Memorial Jam 2017](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/matt-tapp-memorial-jam-2017/): Seeing that Charlie is almost a veteran this now, it's safe to say he always got things under control. The amount of sponsers this year was incredable. From what started out to just being a handful of local compaines, now the event is drawing in some pretty big well know brands and compaines (view the thank you section below). The Main Events - Matt Tapp Memorial Jam 2017I know I pretty much say this every year but either because I've been out of the skateboarding and extreme sports world for too long or the people down Farnborough just know how to step things up! Once again the level of riding was incredible. I guess some people saw what was up for grabs for the winning riders! Banger after banger was chucked up, down and all around the park. New lines and some old classic combos. Some people had come out chasing that WIN. - [Fitness Photography Lighting](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/fitness-photography-lighting/): I tend to get a lot of questions asking about my fitness photography lighting and what I use. I therefore decided on my recent shoot with Mark Weston to give a quick run down on my lighting. Lighting is something that can make or break a shoot in my opinion. With a poor lighting setup you'll end up with a rather flat dull looking image. - [The Gym Gloucester Bench Press a Boeing 747-400](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/the-gym-gloucester-bench-press-a-boeing-747/): The challenge was to bench press the combined weight of a Boeing 747-400. For the guys there would be 60kg on the bar for 600 reps and for the girls 30kg for 300 reps. In total every guy who entered would be lifting 36,000kg and the girls 9,000kg. Although James being James set the bar higher and rather than a single plane the total was aiming for two Boeing 747's!Just Rep It Out!Once the first few rounds were under everyone's belt, the challenge then turned to - "Who can rep out the most". No more 20 rep sets, everyone was aiming for the highest number possible! 40, 50, 65 and then finally a massive 76 rep set. It was clear to see the team and family spirit was alive in The Gym. - [First Look: Elinchrom Umbrella Deep](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/first-look-elinchrom-umbrella-deep/): If you're like me and sometimes you get a little excited over new photography products, then you are in for a treat! Elinchrom just launched some new accessories and one that caught my eye was their new Elinchrom Umbrella Deep. The main feature that makes this different from the other umbrellas in the Elinchrom range is the massive depth and size. - [Christmas in London](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/christmas-in-london/): As the festive season is now here and the Christmas cheer is in full flow, it was only right to pay a visit to London. Why London? Nothing says Christmas like seeing some of what London has to offer with their Christmas lights! Which from the previous year's I've visited, they have been rather special. Every street seems to be awash with colour, lighting up the dull nights with bright colourful illuminations.Busy Streets with Christmas ColourThe only issue with going to London at Christmas time is the fact everyone else has the same idea as well! If you've ever been to London, you'll know how busy the streets are......when it's Christmas multiple that by 10. The city streets were packed with hundreds if not thousands of people. Stopping right in front of you when you're trying to walk, people almost getting run over by the buses who just blast their horns to get you out the way. All adds to the London city charm! - [Gloucester Cathedral 360 Virtual Reality Tour](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/gloucester-cathedral-360-virtual-reality-tour/): Gloucester Cathedral is a glorious sacred space as well a spiritual house of prayer. This magnificent and historic place is simply breath taking. Therefore this was reason for the creation of my biggest 360 virtual tour to date. For this 360 virtual tour however I wanted to do something a little different, I wanted to create a full VR (virtual reality) tour of the cathedral. Something I had never tried before, but seeing as this building is extremely unique to Gloucester I wanted to add to that experience.360 Virtual Reality TourBelow is the final completed tour embedded into this page. Viewing the tour is simple - you can navigate from scene to scene via the arrows which are showing the direction to go. This allows you to visit the whole of the Gloucester Cathedral grounds, also if you're quick you might just make it to the Quire before the afternoon song!! - [Churchdown Jam 2016](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/churchdown-jam-2016/): On Sunday 18th September Maverick Industries held the annual Churchdown Jam. Although this years jam was actually put back due to the poor weather back in June, which seems to be a common theme when it comes to the Churchdown Jam, the crowds and riders were still out in force. - [Gloucester City Marathon 2016](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/gloucester-city-marathon-2016/): Today saw the city streets of Gloucester over run with runners all ages. The reason, to take part in the Gloucester City Marathon. A marathon around the city and surrounding areas, on what was a hot day for running. - [Gloucester 360 Virtual Reality Project](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/gloucester-360-virtual-reality/): 360 Virtual Reality is one project I've been working on recently by building and creating a complete tour of Gloucester cathedral. You might be wondering what a 360 virtual reality tour actually is?! Step into the world of 360 Photography and enjoy something new. - [Matt Tapp Memorial Jam 2016](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/matt-tapp-memorial-jam-2016/): The third annual Matt Tapp Memorial Jam down Farnborough skate park. A gathering of skateboarders, BMXers as well as friends and family brought together to celebrate and remember the life of fellow skateboarder Matt Tapp. - [Review: Elinchrom Skyport Plus Receivers](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/elinchrom-skyport-plus-receivers/): I remember when the very first Elinchrom Skyports were launched back in 2007, they were my go to remote for the start of my flash photography. Fast forward to 2016 and Elinchrom have totally redesigned the Skyports in the form of the new Elinchrom Skyport Plus – so what’s new and how do they compare to the older speed units? Luckily I’ve been able to purchase a pair (these things are quite hard to find at the moment!) to try them out and see what’s what! The Refreshed and Updated Elinchrom Skyport SystemLast month I updated my lighting equipment to the new Elinchrom ELB with HS head and their brand new HS remote for Nikon. This allows me to now shoot at 1/8000th with ease! Nothing to set-up just pop on the hot shoe, turn on the ELB and remote, then you’re good to go. Simple has never been so easy. However one thing I didn’t allow for when I bought into the Elinchrom system again was how I was going to fire my Nikon SB-910s?! On my very shoot with the ELB I tried to simply but the SB-910 into SU-4 mode (a built in optical slave mode on the Nikon system) this kind of worked however I was so used to using a faster flash duration for shooting skateboarding, I didn’t know at the time to turn the flash to 1/1 power as you need to have a longer flash duration for hi-sync photography. - [Lighting In Layers](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/lighting-in-layers/): Lighting has always played a massive part in my photography ever since I started. I remember the first time I got into flash photography and the photos were very much – flash one side and then shoot and guess. Now I’ve learnt how lighting a scene is more about using the flashes to build with the environment and light in layers. This same concept was used the other night in my first skateboarding photo of 2016 and since I can remember?!Lighting What you Already SeeA lot of times with lighting people use their flashes against what is already there. Whilst you might light the subject nothing looks natural and sometimes can be a little over the top. Stop and see where the lighting is falling on the scene/subject and try to match the flashes to that. This was my aim last night with my skateboarding photo. Once I picked my composition I then tried to work out the flash set up. Below is what I came up with and the reasoning behind it.Lighting InformationYes there’s a lot of flashes around but here’s the reasoning behind it – - [Santa Scrumpty 360 Photography](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/santa-scrumpty-360/): Gloucester has been home to the Scrumpty statues for quite a while now, ever since the Rugby World Cup. Now the others have gone a new face has popped up for this festive season...Santa Scrumpty. However rather than just some normal photography, like above, I thought why not create a 360 photo which you can view anywhere and anytime!! So this is how the 360 Santa Scrumpty came to be.What's a Scrumpty? If you're not too familiar with what a Scrumpty is then here's what you need to know, taken from the Scrumpty site - - [Parkfields 360 Virtual Tour](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/parkfields-360-virtual-tour/): Parkfields Country House is an elegant setting for weddings, corporate events and special family occasions which is located in Herefordshire. I was approached by the team at Parkfields to produce a 360 Virtual Tour of their location which would then be published online show to their website for clients to have a better understanding of the setting and environment. The idea behind the tour was to cover the various buildings on the Parkfields location and split the tours into septate scenes in relation to these buildings. Below are the completed tours designed and submitted to Parkfields. - [Cirencester’s Annual Scratch N Skate 2015](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/cirencester-scratch-n-skate/): A year on from the opening jam and the crew at Decimal wanted to make their second year skate comp bigger and better than the last! Which was going to be tough as last years was something special to say the least. Luckily Gaz from Decimal had the helping hand from a lot of big sponsors to make the prize packs rather amazing and worth throwing yourself at every trick to be in a chance of winning. Food, good music and what was perfect weather made the Cirencester’s Annual Scratch N Skate something to remember. - [Churchdown Skate Jam 2015](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/churchdown-skate-jam-2015/): Every year the guys and girls at Maverick come up to Churchdown skate park to host the parks jam, and 2015 was no different. Seeing as the skate park is 5 minutes from my house I thought I’d go along and capture the action of the Churchdown Skate Jam 2015. At least the sun was out providing a good weathered day for everyone, both riders and those watching the action, not forgetting the food on offer as well.Churchdown Skate Jam 2015 GalleryFor those who couldn’t make it down here’s some photos from the Churchdown Skate Jam 2015. If you're interested in purchasing any photos from the jam, then please send me a message here via the contact form here. - [Matt Tapp Jam 2015](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/matt-tapp-jam-2015/): As it’s June time again this means one thing to the skateboarders and BMXers of Farnborough/Aldershot area, time to get together and celebrate the Matt Tapp Jam. This is the second annual jam after the massive success of last years. The whole idea of the Matt Tapp Memorial Jam is to celebrate the life of a fellow skater who sadly left us just under 2 years ago and to raise money for the charity CALM, which is set up to create awareness of the support against young male suicide.Matt Tapp Jam 2015Once again the whole show was put together by Charlie Norton (aka Big Boss) who organised the idea of having food, a raffle to create some hype for the mass amount of prizes that were donated as well as the main BMX and skateboard jams. Music was playing the whole day and a massive turn out of support, even people who were just passing by came over to have a look to see what was going on. - [Fast Paced Location Lighting with Joe McNally](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/fast-paced-location-lighting-with-joe-mcnally/): On Saturday 29th November I booked myself onto one of the many training courses put on by Nikon UK at their Centre of Excellence in London. The main focus on this course was looking at off camera flash control to create quality flash light to work with ambient light. The course was presented by the flash guru that is Joe McNally. - [Why I’ve Given In and Bought a Nikon D800](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/why-ive-bought-a-nikon-d800/): Back when Nikon announced the Nikon D800 in 2012 everyone went crazy for it! Back orders and stock shortage because everyone was after a full frame DSLR that can shoot 36.3 megapixel, which was more than half the price of a Hasselblad or Phase One body. The image quality was amazing, however there was some who were waiting for Nikon D700 update – more speed, slightly more ISO range and a few more megapixels. I was one of them….so the Nikon D800 didn’t quite suit. - [Review: Think Tank Photo City Walker 10](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/review-think-tank-photo-city-walker-10/): Having the perfect bag is always a tough choice when you're a photographer. There are soo many different shoulder, backpacks and roller bags out there. For my trip to Barcelona I needed a bag that was small, able to hold a decent amount of equipment and didn't actually look like a camera bag! After looking at so many different bags I settled for the Think Tank City Walker. A messenger style shoulder bag designed for the city. Ideal for my week long break within Barcelona. - [Travel Photography Checklist](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/travel-photography-checklist/): Therefore I booked the first week of September to do just that. However having so much camera equipment left me with a bit of an issue......what camera, lenses and extras should I be taking?! Travel photography should be about enjoying your adventure, rather than worrying about carrying loads of equipment! - [The Basics of ND Filters](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/nd-filters/): depending on how much light you want to cut out would depend on what strength of ND filter you would go for. For myself I went for a ND 102, 103 & ND 110. The reason why I picked three is the fact sometimes I’d only want to cut down the amount by a few stops, therefore having a ND 102 & 103 means I can choose between 2 stops, 3 stops or stack them to get 5 stops. I mainly use these two filters to create a shallower depth of field when shooting portraits in bright sunny conditions. - [Behind the Lens with Matt Thomas](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/behind-the-lens-with-matt-thomas/): Seeing as quite a few people ask what I carry in my bag and how I shoot, I thought I'd make a little behind the lens video from a photo shoot. Nothing too tech just a friendly look at what I do and why. - [How To: Use Manual Focus Nikon Lenses on a Nikon DSLR](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/manual-focus-nikon-lenses/): So now you’ve heard why I chose some older Nikon lenses, now it’s time to tell you how to use them. If you have used a film SLR’s you’ll notice that they normally have a split screen in the middle which is there to aid you whilst focusing, however, if you look at your DSLR screen or through the viewfinder you don’t have this. How To Use Manual Focus Nikon LensesIf you look in the lower left of your viewfinder you’ll notice two triangles and a dot. This is your focus indicator, which is very handy when using manual lenses on a digital body (or using any lens in manual focus mode.)How it WorksCentre the focus brackets on your subject and lightly press the shutter release button. The focus indicator appears or blinks as follows. - [Skateboard Photography 101 – Quick Guide](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/skateboard-photography-101-quick-guide/): Just make sure you’ve got a way of connecting the radio slave to the flash, this is normally via sync port (you get some cables with the radio slave units otherwise you can pick up sync cables very easily)LensesNow you’ve got your camera it’s time to think what you’re going to put on the front…….straight away everyone says fisheye!! Yes fisheye is a key lens within skateboard photography but it’s not the be and end of, to be fair you’re better off getting a good couple of prime lenses and learn about composing photos first before stick any fisheye on the front. The good thing about prime lenses is the very fast aperture to create that separation from the background. The main prime lenses I use are a 50mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.4 I use the 85mm more when shooting skating though as the short telephoto view point just gives the right field of view allowing to compress the background and make the subject stand out more. ## Pages - [Cookie Policy](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/cookie-policy/): Learn how we use cookies to improve functionality, analyse traffic, and personalize content. As a lot of the equipment that needed to be photographed were large racks and benches, the shoot was to take place at their main HQ over in Calne. The first day of shooting would be focused on the e-commerce side of photographing the products on a clean white background and then the second day was a mixture of lifestyle as well as capturing the models hired for the shoot in the HyGym branded leggings. HyGym had actually created a mini studio booth to shoot the photos within, which was perfect for the larger squat rack, as it meant during the editing process in Photoshop it was a lot easier to cut out the squat rack from the background. For the smaller items, I did however switch over to using my cloth background to save having to use the pen tool to cut out the items. On the second of shooting, we used the steel shutter door as a background to shoot against which gave a very modern and interesting texture. This was enhanced by adding a Lee Filters colour gel to turn the standard flash light into something more dynamic. The whole shoot was shot tethered into Capture One, meaning the HyGym team could see the photos directly on my laptop, which due to social distancing worked out very well. - [Lewiston Mill – Colburn Homes](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/commercial/lewiston-mill-colburn-homes/): Lewiston Mill is a luxury three-bedroom home situated in Brimscombe. Set over three floors with stunning views of the Mill Pond. I was contacted by Colburn Homes to create another 360 virtual tour for their website. Capturing the stunning property and allowing visitors to browse this showhome from the comfort of their own home, day or night. Adding a new menu system giving users the option to jump between different scenes, as well as the more traditional "walk-through" navigation. This new menu works perfectly on desktop as well as mobile devices. If you want to find out more about the virtual tours I offer, then make sure you visit my 360 Virtual Tours page and get in touch today. - [Elite Freakz](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/commercial/elite-freakz/): Elite Freakz are a Premium Fitness Supplements company based in Gloucestershire. The owner Andy came to myself after seeing my own website and wanted one for his new company. As well as building the online store the site also needed some strong visuals of their various products. Using the bold colours of yellow and black, I built a website that kept the branding across the whole of the website. On the products pages, I made sure to a nutritional information tab, listing all the details and breakdown of the supplements. For example here on the isoWhey page, where you have three different tables with the different product breakdown per flavour. This was achieved using the TablePress plugin and copying the data from an Excel document. The whole of the website was designed to work perfectly on mobile and desktop. Making sure buttons were larger on mobile, aligning text differently as well as adapting the home banner for mobile. All the visuals for the products were shot at my home studio. Using high reflective cardboard this gave the products a mirrored look. A large softbox was used for the background to create that seamless white background. - [Oneteam Healthcare Services](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/commercial/oneteam-healthcare-services/): Oneteam Healthcare Services is a recruitment agency, specialising in the recruitment of temporary and permanent staff for the health and social care sector. I was asked by Oneteam to capture some marketing and online advertising photography the team could use on their newly launching website. As their main head office is based in Gloucester, we shoot some recruitment and office stock images on-site there. To balance the ambient light I used an Elinchrom ELB to light up the overall exposure of the scene. The brief was to make sure that the photos looked natural, so rather than posing the clients, I just told them to act out a scene like nobody was there. Shooting photos throughout their conversation to capture natural expressions. We also visited one of their local care homes. Using one of the rooms of the care home as a location for another natural friendly scene. This allowed the carer and resident to feel comfortable in having their photograph taken. Whilst at the care home we also captured some informal portraits of the care assistants for their about me page. To see the final photos live on the Oneteam website, make sure to visit the link below. - [Fitness Superstore – Body Power Strength Equipment](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/commercial/fitness-superstore/): I was approached by Fitness Superstore to capture their new Bodypower line of strength equipment for their website. A task which developed from a select number of times to then being a line-up of over 15 gym based machines and benches. The shoot was to take place at their HQ over in Northampton inside one of the main warehouses. I'd work with Fitness Superstore before, shooting some photos of their Gloucester branch however, this shoot was going to be one of the biggest shoots they had to date. For the shoot, I needed to capture the gym equipment ready to post onto the Fitness Superstore's website. The products would need to be cut out and placed on a white background, a typical e-commerce style. Knowing this I bought a Calumet background support system as well as a large muslin style background. The lighting for the shoot was all shot with Elinchrom ELB 400's with a 135cm softbox, 125cm deep umbrella as well as a 105cm white shoot through umbrella. The three light setup was perfect to fill in the shadows on the dark gym equipment as well providing nice even and soft light. Although I was using a white background, this was mainly to have a clean background to cut the benches and gym equipment out from. The editing was processed within Adobe Photoshop using a mixture of layer masking and the pen tool. On the before and after you can see the difference between how the photo was shot to the final edit ready to publish for the website. As well as the studio shoots a selection of lifestyle images were also needed to display the products in a "home/lifestyle" enviroment. These were just captured in the same warehouse space as the studio, just at the oppisite side to the background setup. - [Muscle and Fitness Magazine](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/commercial/muscle-and-fitness-magazine/): Muscle and Fitness was always a magazine I dreamed about seeing my own photography in one day. Picking up every issue and enjoying reading the articles as well as admiring the stunning photography. Therefore when I had the chance to have some of my own photography featured in the August 2018 issue, I couldn't believe it! I'd worked with Gaz on a shoot last year, so when he booked in for another I couldn't wait to see what content we could create this time. The shoot was actually the day before his show (almost 10 hours before actually) so we made sure we managed to get everything we needed ASAP, so he get back to Bristol and rest before stepping on stage. During the shoot, Gaz had a variety of different ideas put together into a mood board. This helped to develop the shoot, with both us knowing what we wanted to try and capture during the session. Everything we shot was actually totally different from the first shoot we had together, therefore meaning he had a variety of new content to publish online. After Gaz had selected the photos from the shoot and the edits sent back to him, he sat down to create the article for Muscle and Fitness. The idea for the magazine was to use the photos as a base to write up the piece about muscle building but in a HIIT style workout. Battle ropes, quick circuits - a workout you can do in pretty much any gym! It was really great to see everything come together, the photos, the article Gaz put together as well as the design layout that Muscle and Fitness created. In fact, they liked it so much, there was a follow-up article in the September issue from Gaz and myself. Back in back publishing in Muscle and Fitness - now just looking for that cover photo soon..... - [Linden Homes](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/commercial/linden-homes/): Linden Homes approached myself as they required some 360 photography for their various show homes to show off the family living space as well as kitchen areas. The photos would then be shared and posted on the Linden's Homes main Facebook page, allowing customers to view the properties before booking a visit. Therefore, I needed to make sure that each 360 had the correct metadata included to make sure when the client uploaded the final image to Facebook, the 360 information was read correctly. To create the final files I used PTGui which allowed me to stitch together the 30 photos into a HDR bracketed exposure. After the blend, the floor was extracted and imported into Photoshop, to fill in the blank area below the tripod. Using a simple content aware fill allowed for a seamless blend. The files were then sent to the client and uploaded to Facebook. You see one of the completed 360's here. To book your own Facebook 360 or Virtual Tour - view the 360 Virtual Tour page. - [Stickman Gymwear – 2017](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/commercial/stickman-gymwear-2017/): Following on from the successful first shoot with Stickman Gymwear, I was asked to capture some of their 2017 range. The Stickman Gymwear 2017 range has a few new items as well as a mixture of last years classic range. I thought I'd switch it up a little bit and venture to a brand new gym down in Bristol called @TheGym, which is located in Nailsea. For this shoot, I contacted Shaun Scammell to be the model. A fitness athlete who I've worked with during 2016 and 2017. Compared to last year I wanted to try and create some more "natural lighting" look to these images, using a mixture of larger softboxes and umbrellas. Combined with the shallow depth of field of the Sigma 35mm and Nikon 85mm it created a 3D pop, perfect to highlight the clothes and the model. - [Fitness Superstore – Gloucester](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/commercial/fitness-superstore-gloucester/): Fitness Superstore is the largest supplier of specialist fitness equipment in the UK. With 11 stores nationwide, I was asked to capture some updated photographs of their Gloucester branch. For the shoot a selection of areas were decided by the main commercial manager and the brief was sent to myself. As they wanted the images to reflect the vast range of products on display at the showroom I opted for my Nikon 16-35mm f/4 G VR lens. As there wasn't much light towards the back of the store I had to use a Nikon SB-910 on camera for a bit of fill light. On the exterior photos I created a small HDR exposure and blended the images within Adobe Lightroom. - [Colburn Homes](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/commercial/colburn-homes/): Colburn Homes are a residential development company based in Gloucestershire. For their latest project in Warwickshire, I was asked to capture a bespoke 360 virtual tour. The purpose was to highlight and showcase one of the new properties at the Devereux Close development. The final tour would be used online, to allow prospective buyers to view the show home before booking a full viewing. For this virtual tour, compared to previous tours, I created a whole new way of navigating between the scenes. On my last project, I used an arrow system to display which way to go. It was quite limited in where and how you could display the navigation. The key aim of this brand new navigation was to be more visual. You can also see a small thumbnail of the next scene, as well as a hover over information icon for rooms not photographed. I also wanted to create a truly responsive skin for the tour, so if you’re viewing the 360 on mobile or desktop, the performance is the same. Hiding certain controls depending on which devices you’re viewing the virtual tour. The full-screen function only accessible on desktop or laptops. Enabling gyroscope control when viewing on mobile devices. All those little things, like the property, add up to creating something with a very easy user experience. - [AKA The Transformation Specialist](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/commercial/aka-the-transformation-specialist/): Adam Ambridge approached me to create his website for his company, AKA The Transformation Specialist. The concept for the site was to create a website that truly stood out from the crowd. With striking colours, a sleek visual layout and attention to the overall user experience. Adam wanted to make use of a blog/journal for his diet and meal plans, so building the site using Wordpress allowed him to achieve this. A small selection of plugins were used to adapt and expand the overall usability of the site. A Mailchimp data capture form was set up to offer a free meal plan for those who register interest in personal training. Allowing Adam to target that audience with offers and other promotional discounts. As well as this Google Analytics was added to the site, allowing Adam to see how people use and navigate around his website. Within the Services page I wanted to make sure the main information was above the fold, so prices and the different services on offer. On some site they tend to list price list after price list however, using a tabbed layout meant all the pricing could stay in one place. For Transformations page I wanted to make sure it was focusing on the clients individual stories. Making sure to display a selection of photos before and after as well as the reason why they picked Adam and their journey with him. The main photographer was shoot during a personal trainer with one of Adam's clients. Rather than using stock photography, shooting on location with real people gave a more personal approach. Overall Adam was extremely happy with the finished product. A strong and visual approach in creating a website that has a lot of custom styling to make it unique with a lot of added character. - [Healthy for Men](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/commercial/healthy-for-men/): Healthy for Men is a fitness magazine that is featured in both GNC and Holland and Barrett stores up and down the UK. Healthy for Men is bi-monthly magazine and I was asked to shoot some photos for their July/August 2016 issue. The article I was involved in was looking at 5 Bodyweight moves to boast about - focusing on Callisthenics (gymnastic bodyweight training). Tom Morgan, who was the main athlete in all the photos, was such a pleasure and ease to work with. Most of the shots we had to run through 5 to 6 times as the idea was to get a sequence demonstrating the movements. Therefore we needed to make sure the editors had a selection to pick from, to use in the magazine. The five moves were - Pistol Squat - Muscle-up - Back lever - Handstand - Human flag Overall the shoot was very successful and it was amazing to see my work final in print. The article and photos came together extremely well. - [Stickman Gymwear – 2016](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/commercial/stickman-gymwear/): Stickman Gymwear is a premium UK fitness clothing company, who contacted myself to photograph their brands clothing line. The idea for the shoot was to create a series of images to be featured on their new online shop and Instagram page, for promoting the brand online. For the shoot I used local The Gym member Mark Weston, who was well suited to the look the company was going for. The lighting used was a mixture of studio rear side ligthting and my standard "clamp shell" deep octa and ring flash setup. - [Hooch](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/commercial/hooch/): I was asked by Hooch to photograph some green screen photos, for their Summer 2016 campaign. The actors I was photographing were some of the top UK Vine artists - Huw Samuel, Joe Charman, Leslie Wai and Stuggy. The team had already been out in Mexico filming some of the video content, therefore these photos were to run alongside the main advert. Shooting on a green screen was something a little different, but the whole shoot was fun and enjoyable for everyone involved. - [Prescott Instruments](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/commercial/prescott-instruments/): Prescott Instruments specialise in laboratory instrument and in-house software development for the Rubber, Plastics and Elastomers industry. With their latest machine, Dynamic Mechanical Analyser, I was asked to shoot a series of photographers to aid a brand new leaflet and content for their website. The Dynamic Mechanical Analyser, which is a used in dynamic and static testing on a variety of materials, was one of the biggest still objects I've photographed to date. It made my Lastolite Hi-Lite 6x7 look small. Therefore quite a bit of Photoshop and post processing was needed to create the white background cut out required. - [Knights Gym – Cheltenham](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/commercial/knights-gym-cheltenham/): Knights Gym is a small local weights gym with a maximum membership of 200. Privately owned and based at the Knightsbridge Business Centre. The team there were after some updated high quality photos to post online. The shoot took place after hours and the main goal was to highlight the equipment on offer at the gym as well as the location. For more information about Knights Gym and what the gym has on offer, visit the link below. - [Trimnasium Gym – Cheltenham](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/commercial/trimnasium-gym/): Trimnasium Gym is a top-class facility near Cheltenham Spa station, which has a state-of-the-art functional training areas, with two 20 metre sprint tracks, a fully equipped sports performance gym and purpose built functional training rig. I was approached by the gym to photograph their complex for social media and their online website. What made this shoot different was the fact this gym has a big open shutter door allowing a lot of natural light to pour through, meaning the far area of Trimnasium Gym needed a bit of fill in flash to boost the shadowed area. For more information about the Trimnasium Gym visit the link below and make sure to check out their free weekend pass offer. - [Severn Fireplaces & Woodburners](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/commercial/severn-fireplaces-woodburners-gloucestershire/): I was approached by the team at Severn Fireplaces & Woodburners Gloucestershire, to photograph their fireplace showroom. The outcome of these photos were to be published on the companies website as well other social networks. The shoot was a huge success and what made photographing Severn Fireplaces a little tricky was the heat! For the shoot all the fireplaces and wood burners were turned on, to show the glowing flames inside the individual fireplaces. A mixture of flash and longer exposures were used to add movement and light the different environments within the showroom. Overall a brilliant experience working with Mark and the team at Severn Fireplaces & Woodburners, look forward to working with you again. - [The Gym Gloucester – Bristol Road](https://www.matt-thomas-photography.co.uk/commercial/the-gym-gloucester/): For this project a set of high quality photographs were needed to highlight and showcase the gym equipment and available machines. The Gym Gloucester is an independent gym, with only the one loaction on Bristol Road in Gloucester. These images were then used on their personal website as well as social media to bring in a wider audience to see what is on offer. Since the first project The Gym Gloucester has been used in various photo shoots, with the gym environment as a backdrop.
